Three people were able to escape safely after their home caught fire Tuesday afternoon in the Jolliff section of Chesapeake. Crews were dispatched to the single-story home in the 4000 block of Oriole Drive around 12:20 p.m. Capt. Steven Bradley with the Chesapeake Fire Department said crews arrived eight minutes later and reported seeing heavy smoke coming from the attic area of the home. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames using handlines and the fire was marked under control at 1 p.m. No one was hurt, and fire officials stressed the three people inside were able to evacuate safely due to working smoke detectors in the home.
