It has been one year since sailor Dakota Rigsby was tragically killed in the U.S.S. Fitzgerald crash, but his memory still lives on. Rigsby was one of the seven sailors killed on the U.S.S. Fitzgerald when it collided with a merchant ship off of the coast of Japan on June 17, 2017.
He was a native of Fluvanna County who worked as a firefighter for the Lake Monticello Volunteer Fire Department.
Since his death, the department has built a new gym which has been named after him.
His gear is also in the same spot, left the way it was when he last wore it.
Chief Rich Constantino said his team will always remember his sacrifice.
