More development and larger buildings have created bigger challenges for firefighters in Botetourt County.
Now the Troutville Volunteer Fire Department has a new tool to protect homes and businesses there.
The department has refurbished a ladder truck, and trained members to operate it. Friday morning, they put the equipment into service.
"We're going to be approaching 600 calls a year," said Fire Chief Zach Beckner, " and so that demand has really increased both our staffing, but also our service level we need to provide."
The department's new addition can carry 300 gallons of water, and extend its ladder 105 feet into the air.
