A new chief with ample experience and Hampton Roads ties has taken command in the city of Suffolk.
Michael J. Barakey of Virginia Beach was sworn into office as chief of Suffolk Fire and Rescue on Sept. 28 at City Hall. His appointment caps a four month search to replace Fire Chief Cedric Scott who departed June 1 to become the fire chief for Albany, Ga.
“My desire is to lead this wonderful department and provide guidance based on my experience and passion to deliver the best fire and rescue services to the citizens of Suffolk,” Barakey said.
A native of Richmond, Barakey served 25 years as a district chief with the Virginia Beach Fire Department. His duties included leadership over special operations, personnel, development, communications, information technology, finance, budget, resource management, research and analysis, and accreditation and training, according to a city news release.
