Retired Richmond fire marshal David 'Chico' Creasy has died after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 67. Creasy, who served local fire departments for more than 50 years, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2014 after 25 tumors were found on his liver. The disease later spread to his hip, back. and right leg. He was given one year to live. "Every day I wake up, I'm blessed," Creasy told 8News back in February as he was pushing to pass legislation through the General Assembly that would help firefighters diagnosed with cancer. "The Lord has blessed me and left me here to, I think, speak to this bill," Creasy said. Even after his diagnosis in 2014, Creasy continued working as Richmond's fire marshal for three years before retiring in 2017. In total, Creasy served area fire departments, including Richmond and Chesterfield County, for more than 50 years.
