Firefighters in Charlottesville are going door-to-door to make sure people have working smoke alarms. Charlottesville’s Fire Department and the University of Virginia are working together to make sure everyone in the city has a working smoke alarm in their home. CFD says the devices can make all the difference in a life-threatening emergency. “It’s more of an educational thing,” said UVA fire marshal Gerald Drumheller. “We’re really trying to be a service to the community because the university is part of the community. The Charlottesville Fire Department and so is Neighborhood Development Service. We try to be a service to the community.” The Charlottesville Fire Department gives out free smoke detectors for those living in the city.
