City officials breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday after the rising waters of the Dan River crested around 23 feet, 5 inches below the height initially forecast. While Danville avoided the major flooding associated with water levels above 25.5 feet, the Dan River’s height reached the threshold for moderate flooding and was expected to remain above 20.5 feet until Tuesday night. The National Weather Service forecasts minor flooding of the Dan will continue through Wednesday afternoon. Meteorologist Andrew Loconto explained that there was less rainfall in the western portion of the Dan River than expected. The river starts in the southern portion of Patrick County and works its way through Stokes and Rockingham counties in North Carolina before passing through Danville and Pittsylvania County.
