Rescuing people from crashed vehicles is an all-too-common thing for first responders.
But with the advancement of technology and safety in cars can present new sets of challenges for them.
About 60 firefighters from across the state were in Ruckersville on Thursday, September 20, at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to learn new techniques when it comes to emergency extrication.
“It gives us the opportunity to not only see a crash live, but also cut on modern-day vehicles that we don't normally get to cut on,” Scott Carpenter, the captain of the Charlottesville Fire Department, said.
And the cars the firefighters practice on are all thanks to State Farm.
“We thought it was very important to donate seven newer salvage model vehicles,” Peter Walther, a State Farm agent, said.
“The newer cars have different systems in them, we've got hybrid cars, we've got all-electric cars, we've got different metals, different construction tactics,” Carpenter said.
