Fire crews responded to a small fire at the University of Virginia on Monday that caused some surrounding roads to temporarily shut down.
Crews responded to Carr’s Hill Road around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, January 14, after reports of a small fire in a utility space.
Fire officials say they had to call in extra units due to the challenging location of the fire.
“It is just challenging to get to also with all the snow we've had recently,” Emily Pelliccia, the deputy fire chief with the Charlottesville Fire Department, said. “There’s a lot of snow on the ground up there, the ground is really soft and saturated, so it’s just presented a little bit of a challenge in terms of access."
Rugby Road and Carr’s Hill Road were closed to traffic for over an hour as crews extinguished the blaze.
No word has yet been released on the total cost in damages to the structure.
