Three animals lost in Brattleboro structure fire

The Brattleboro Fire Department is investigating a structure fire that claimed the lives of three animals. Two stations were dispatched just before 7 p.m. Thursday, for a fire at a home on Carriage Hill Road. The caller reported smoke coming from the vents in the roof. Crews confirmed all occupants of the home were accounted for, but there were four animals inside the home. Three dogs and one cat were found inside the home, according to officials. Emergency crews performed CPR on two dogs, but they couldn't be revived. The cat was deceased. The third dog survived. Investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen. It took first responders about 30 minutes to get it under control. The occupants of the home are staying with family and friends. Golden Cross Ambulance, Guilford Fire Dept., Keene Fire Dept., DPW, and Green Mountain Power assisted at the scene.

Update: Suspect charged with alleged arson at Bernie Sanders’ Burlington office pleads not guilty

Shant “Michael” Soghomonian has pleaded not guilty to setting a fire at Sen. Bernie Sanders’ office earlier this month. After several rounds of delays, Soghomonian appeared in a Burlington federal courtroom for an official arraignment. The 35-year-old pleaded not guilty to the federal charge of maliciously damaging by means of fire the building at One Church Street, a building used in interstate commerce and as a place of activity affecting interstate commerce. Soghomonian is the man who local, state, and federal authorities say set fire to the door of Sen. Sanders’ office on April 5. He was in court Tuesday to answer to the charges, but not before several days' worth of delays in his case. It was a fast proceeding Tuesday afternoon as Soghomonian was in the courtroom for about 10 minutes.
