The Clarkston City Council wants department heads to make more money than their subordinates. At a budget workshop Wednesday night, the group was leaning toward 5.5 percent pay raises for the fire and police chiefs, clerk/treasurer and public works director. If approved, the salaries of the four managers will go from $76,550 a year to $80,760 in 2017. Fire Chief Steve Cooper said the flat rate for department heads has worked well for the past 10 years, eliminating jealousy and bickering over pay increases. The second in command at the police department is also poised to get a bump, from $73,776 to $78,571, a 6.5 percent increase. With overtime, several police officers currently make more than their bosses.
