Volunteer firefighter numbers nationwide continue to decrease in communities where surrounding fire departments rely heavily on volunteer help.
Pete Lorea has been a volunteer firefighter at Franklin County Fire District 3 for over 5 years.
When he's not working his day job he's either checking the fire trucks or running to the next call.
"You're serving your community," said Lorea. "That's something I definitely was always interested in," he said.
According to the "Fedhealth Blog" almost 70 percent of firefighters across the country are volunteers.
However, numbers are dwindling.
"We don't have a community where volunteers work around the corner and the employer lets them leave when the whistle goes off," said Fire Chief Mike Harris, Franklin County Fire District 3.
