A man was rescued by helicopter Thursday after being trapped for four days on a cliff near Mud Mountain Dam in the Enumclaw area, emergency officials said.
The rescue effort was launched after an Army Corps of Engineers employee heard the man shouting for help.
A rescue crew responded in a King County Sheriff's helicopter. A land-based rope rescue team also responded in case the helicopter rescue wasn't successful.
Enumclaw Fire Chief Randy Fehr says rescue teams initially made voice contact with the 41-year-old man, then later spotted him from the chopper. He was then hoisted up and loaded into an ambulance for transport to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
"It's very rough terrain," Fehr said. "It's very difficult to get in to this person."
There was no immediate word on the man's condition.
Fehr said he understands that visitors to Mud Mountain Dam heard someone shouting in the area a few days ago, but then the shouts trailed off and went away.
An Army Corps of Engineers employee heard the shouts again Thursday morning while making routine checks and notified the King County Sheriff's Office, sparking the rescue effort.
Cindi West of the King County Sheriff's Office says it turns out that the man is a transient who jumped a fence on Sunday while looking for a place to camp and got stuck on the cliff.
