It remains the deadliest fire in Seattle's history. 32 people died when a B-29 prototype bomber crashed into the Frye Meatpacking Plant in the SoDo neighborhood. Among the dead was Luther Bonner, 23, a relatively new member of Seattle's firefighting ranks. He was killed after being overcome by gases released when the plant's refrigeration lines were severed. "Did his job, didn't leave didn't just run out," explained retired Seattle firefighter David Peery, who has researched Bonner's death and the disaster around it, "He told his officer it was time to leave and...that's the way it goes sometimes." Peery worked for years to do what few had since Bonner's death and provide a proper memorial and remembrance. He succeeded in 2009, but Tuesday, the King County Council will do its part as well. A resolution introduced by council member Joe McDermott would name the new Aircraft and Firefighting building, or AARF, at Boeing Field after Bonner. "When someone makes the ultimate sacrifice, it's important to remember that and honor that," said McDermott, "We didn't do that for generations."
