Firefighters were once again called to the former Seattle Times headquarters Wednesday night after a fire broke out inside the vacant building. The building, located at John Street and Fairview Avenue, has been popular with transients since the Times left in 2011. Seattle fire crews were called to the building Wednesday night at about 8:30 p.m. after getting reports of smoke drifting from the building. It's unclear what sparked the fire, which started on the second floor, but Seattle fire officials described it as "suspicious." Several transients were seen escaping the smoke just as the first fire engines arrived. "We have been here a few times for transient fires because we do have people living in this building from time to time," said Lt. Harold Webb with the Seattle Fire Department. Firefighters had to cut their way into the building to get at the flames. "The building is cut up and floors have given away, so this building has been listed as a dangerous building, so this information is broadcast to all units as we respond in," Webb said.
