An 8-year-old girl was killed and five persons injured Wednesday when a suspect and two others fleeing from police in an SUV ran a stop sign at high speed and crashed into an off-duty deputy's pickup with three people inside, officials said. The violent force of the crash sent the suspect's SUV spiralling into a power pole and sent the pickup hurtling through the garage door of a house nearby. The 8-year-old daughter of the off-duty sheriff's deputy was riding in the pickup and died of injuries suffered in the crash. Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones called the crash "a heartbreaking turn of events." The tragedy unfolded at about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday when police responded to a call about a possible vehicle prowl on Nob Hill Drive NE in Ephrata, the Grant County Sheriff's Office said in a prepared statement.
