Spokane fire crews are responding to a fire at a historic downtown Spokane building on Thursday afternoon. It happened at 1:40 p.m. at the historic Washington Cracker Company building on W. Pacific. It is now used as a mixed-use business and a soon to be coffee bar. There were reports of heavy smoke from the roof of the building. When crews arrived, they found a growing fire in the roof and multiple people were trying to put it out. Fire officials evacuated the building and brought a fire hose up to the roof to help put out the flames. The fire did moderate damage to the building's roof. The total property damage is estimated to be $15,000. Authorities said the fire has been classified as unintentional. They believe the fire started due to reflected heat from the sun from stainless steel that started nearby combustibles. Officials said a large amount of palletized stainless steel parts were on the roof and awaiting installation and were responsible for starting the fire.
