A teenage boy has died after falling into "deep water" near the town of Eatonville in Pierce County. Orting Valley Fire and Rescue crews, South Pierce Fire and Rescue and the Pierce County Sheriff's Office all responded Sunday evening to a report of a water rescue at Little Mashel Falls. The 911 caller told dispatchers that a 13-year old boy jumped into the water and did not come back up, according to Pierce County Sheriff Sgt. Jerry Bates. The caller also said the boy was not wearing a life jacket and didn't know how to swim. After jumping into the water, the 13-year old got swept away by the current, said Bates. Search and rescue crews were able to recover the body a short time later and attempted life saving techniques, but they were unsuccessful. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. He is from the Spanaway area, according to Bates and was at the river with family and friends. Search and rescue crews are still on scene and the Pierce County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation.
