An 83-year-old woman managed to scramble to safety when her home caught fire Sunday evening. The blaze broke out just before 9:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of Lake Ave. South. The woman smelled the smoke, then managed to get outside before the flames spread. Two firetrucks initially arrived, but had to call in six others in a second alarm once the extent of the fire became apparent. The fire was put out a short time later and the woman who escaped didn't need medical treatment, officials said. There is no word what caused the fire.
