The Safeway on Hamilton and Mission was evacuated Tuesday morning after employees inside smelled natural gas around 5:30am and called 911. The Spokane Fire Department responded to the scene, shut off gas supply to the building and make sure everyone was evacuated safely. Avista arrived on scene just after 7am to investigate where the leak is coming from. According to Interim Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer, there’s no estimate as to when the store will be back open. The parking lot is blocked off while crews continue to investigate the scene.
