Firefighters say they've seen more smoking-related fires recently.
People are putting out their cigarettes in flammable areas before making sure it's completely out.
Firefighters say you should never put out a cigarette in a potted plant because the soil is usually flammable. Wood chips and other material in the soil make it the perfect kindle for a fire.
"As it smolders it builds up this charred area, and all it takes is the right temperature,a little bit of breeze and now we've ignited it and it extends into their backyard, their porch, the back side of their house," Yakima Fire Capt. Jeff Pfaff said.
If you do need to put out a cigarette, make sure its in a metal can, ash tray, or put out with water.
