An Olympia family escaped with their lives overnight after an alert dad noticed fire spreading in the ceiling near their fireplace of their home, fire officials said.
Firefighters responded to the scene, in the 300 block of West Bay Drive NW in Olympia, at about 10:50 p.m. Wednesday after the man called 911. He told dispatchers he had noticed a problem around the fireplace and found fire just beginning to show on the ceiling. He then evacuated his family and called in.
Fire crews arrived within five minutes and found fire in the attic that was spreading to the rest of the house. Firefighters cut out sections of the ceiling and roof to reach the fire and extinguish it, said Greg Wright, deputy chief of the Olympia Fire Department.
