Firefighters who responded to a garage fire in west Yakima on Sunday afternoon were able to keep it from spreading to nearby homes.
Eighteen firefighters from the Yakima and West Valley fire departments initially responded to the blaze, located on Saddle Brook Court, said Yakima Fire Battalion Chief Jennifer Norton.
The homeowner, who declined to give his name, said the flames reached 30 feet into the air but firefighters arrived in just minutes and quickly had the blaze out.
“That’s what our guys train hard to do,” Norton said. “It worked very well this time.” The garage and most of its contents were destroyed, which is estimated at about a $40,000 loss, Norton said. The fire was accidentally sparked by a rototiller that was left running, she said.
