The parents of one of the student victims of the September 2015 Aurora Bridge crash lost a round in federal court as they tried to hold the sightseeing company accountable for their emotional distress suffered over the death of their daughter. U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Zilly ruled that as per Washington state law, parents cannot recover these kinds of damages if the parents didn’t rely on the child for support. In this case, the student, 20-year-old Ha Ra Kim, was financially dependent on her parents, not the other way around.
