Two people are dead and a firefighter is in the hospital after a fire at an apartment complex in north Spokane. The firefighter sustained second and third-degree burns while trying to save the two people inside. At last report the firefighter was in serious condition.
.The 29-year-old probationary firefighter has burns to his upper torso. He's been with the Spokane Fire Department for about a year and was two weeks away from becoming a full-time firefighter.
Assistant Chief Brian Schaeffer says he was one of the first on the scene from Station 18, and the firefighters on that engine were informed there were people inside when they got on scene. Thinking they may be able to save a life, they broke down the door. After a short search for victims, the fire flashed, burning the firefighter before he could get out.
