Fire Chief Gary Baar will retire next April, councilor Dave Burns reported at the Sept. 6 City Council meeting.
By then, Baar, 65, will have 35 years of fire service with the Lynden Fire Department, six of those as assistant chief before becoming chief in 2006. He took some time off last year after having heart valve surgery.
Baar said he still loves his job, but he also feels his age and knows it’s time to retire. He said this has nothing to do with others who are leaving Lynden city employment unhappily.
