A small 2 to 3 acre fire on Chuckanut Mountain grew rapidly overnight to 60 acres and is now threatening 4 homes. Janet Pearce with State Department of Natural Resources said the extremely hot, dry weather has made the situation worse. Local fire districts are joining with DNR resources to work on the fire. Helicopters are also bringing in water. South Whatcom Fire Authority Chief Dave Ralston said his crews were dispatched to check the fire Tuesday afternoon. As of Wednesday morning, Chief Ralston said the fire moved down a canyon, and may be threatening homes near Chuckanut Crest Ridge. The cause is under investigation.
