The American Red Cross recognized Ed Hartin, fire chief with Central Whidbey Island Fire and Rescue, for his efforts in improving cardiac arrest survival in the community. Under Hartin, the fire district provides hands-only CPR training and has helped increase public access to AEDs. At the Northwest Washington Red Cross Heroes Breakfast, Hartin said “improving cardiac arrest survival is a team effort” and recognized WhidbeyHealth EMS, the Town of Coupeville and the community as key partners in the effort. At the awards, Hartin said the fire district is committed to providing training to “one student, two students, 100 students, or 500 students, whenever and wherever is convenient for them.”
