Firefighters remain at the scene of a fire at an abandoned motel on South Frontage Road in Wapato. The Wapato Fire Department responded to the report of a fire just before 3:30 a.m. Thursday at 97 S. Frontage Rd. Additional crews from Toppenish and Yakima were called to assist, said Wapato mayor Juan Orozco. Firefighters said no one was in the building when they arrived. The extent of damage to the building is not yet known at this time as fire crews wait for the smoke to clear, but the top story of the two story building appears to be destroyed.
