An illegal burn barrel was the cause of a garage fire in Aberdeen yesterday, no injuries were reported. Battalion Chief Dave Golding said the Aberdeen Fire Department was assisted by Hoquiam firefighters when they responded to the 200 Block of W. 2nd Street just before 4:30 pm Wednesday afternoon. Arriving units found a detached garage with large amounts of smoke coming from the eves and doorway. Firefighters were able to gain entry into the unoccupied garage and quickly extinguished the fire before it spread. Golding said the cause was an unattended burning barrel that was close to the back wall of the garage and a small pile of wood. The property owner had been using the burning barrel earlier in the day. Investigators believe the wood pile allowed the fire to spread to the garage.
