A longtime Asotin firefighter resigned during a heated discussion at this week's Asotin City Council meeting Monday night. Shawn Balzer, a captain at the volunteer department, reportedly said he was quitting after a clash over a proposed drive-through coffee shop near the downtown fire station. Firefighters said they're concerned about access to the station and parking during an emergency. Asotin Fire Chief Noel Hardin was unable to attend Monday night's session and had sought to have the agenda item pushed back to Jan. 23.
