A state Type 3 Fire Management team this morning assumed coordination of firefighting efforts on the Canyon Creek Fire, located near Carlton in the Methow Valley. A new estimate of size and containment will be issued later today. The Type 3 team took over at around 6 am. Sunday and ordered additional resources to battle the blaze, which has officially scorched 300-plus acres. Some late estimates put the fire’s size at almost 1,000 acres. A new estimate of the fire’s size is due around 10 a.m. Reports of the fire destroying one abandoned house had not been confirmed by the fire team by 9 a.m. “We’re lucky this fire came early in the season,” said Okanogan County Emergency Manager Maurice Goodall. “There are resources available that – if big fires were burning elsewhere – might not be able to come here.”
