Firefighters were expected to work into the night Thursday to contain a 5,000-acre fire burning in the Army’s sprawling Yakima Training Center.
The fire — on the east side of the training center near the Columbia River — started Wednesday evening. Firefighters have contained the north end, but as of Thursday afternoon only 10 percent of the south side was contained, according to an Army news release. Crews have been challenged by the steep terrain and winds of up to 15 mph, according to the release.
Workers at the Shell Desert Aire Mini Mart across the Columbia River from the training center said they could see large amounts of smoke coming from the fire, but have not seen any flames or been warned of any potential danger.
