Yakima fire officials say an early Monday morning fire that blackened up to 6 acres and closed the Yakima Greenway was caused by a person.
"We believe it was set by a person," said Yakima Fire Department Shift commander Tom Schneider. It is not known if the fire, located next to the Yakima Greenway east of the old Boise-Cascade mill site in northern Yakima, was deliberately set or was a campfire that went out of control, Schneider said.
He said a "person of interest" has been identified.
East Valley Fire Department was initially called at 4:44 a.m. for the fire, but turned it over to Yakima firefighters when it was found to be on the west side of the river, Schneider said.
Firefighters evacuated homeless people from the area of the fire.
