It's still not clear what caused a small fire at a home near 12th and Adams Thursday morning, but fire investigators are confident that the home would not be standing without proper smoke detectors. The home was vacant at the time the fire started just after 7:00 a.m. A woman who was walking by the property heard the sound of smoke alarms and immediately called 9-1-1. Engine 7 from the Spokane Valley Fire Department was first on scene and quickly got the fire under control. Most of the damage was kept to the basement of the house but firefighters did have to cut several ventilation holes in the roof of the home. KXLY spoke to the homeowner who was grateful for the quick response of firefighters. He says he's confident that he can repair the house which is not his primary residence.
