A Herron Island woman woke up to flames burning her bedsheets Saturday morning in a fire that burned her home to the ground, according to the Key Peninsula Fire Department.
Crews were dispatched to the home in the 200 block of Fir Lane about 8:30 a.m.
By the time firefighters reached the island by ferry, they arrived to see the 900-square-foot home engulfed in flames, Key Peninsula Chief Guy Allen said.
“It’s a total loss, obviously,” Allen said. “There is nothing left to salvage.” The woman was in bed when she saw the flames, Allen said, and she tried to put the fire out herself with water. As she did so, she tripped on the floor, which led to a delay in firefighters’ response to the home.
