A 10,000-acre fire burning along Highway 14 in the Columbia River Gorge Tuesday evening has forced the closure of the highway and evacuation orders. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the fire started on Highway 14 and is burning on Bureau of Indian Affairs and private land. The Milepost 90 Fire (it was initially called the Avery Fire) started around 4:30 p.m. and within 90 minutes jumped to 1,200 acres and then burned north up the canyons then and east. A Level 3 (Go Now) order is in effect on the north side of Highway 14 (Wishram Heights) while a Level 1 is in effect on the south side. A Level 3 evacuation order is also in effect in Centerville south of Dalles Mountain Road. A Level 2 is in effect for Centerville.
