The Sheep Creek Fire, located approximately six miles north of Northport is five percent contained, has 350 fire personnel working on the blaze and has grown to 249 acres since sparking on Monday. The fire is burning on private land with mixed timber and pockets of heavy logging slash and standing dead timber. Snags are presenting a danger to firefighters as the fire size increases. The fire made a push to the east yesterday and there was a visible smoke plume yesterday. Heavy air support has been used on the fire – including Washington National Guard resources – and that has kept the fire within the boundaires of the Flagstaff and Sheep Creek roads. Fire crews have worked establishing doze lines on the west side of the fire to prevent spreading. There are cabins along the Sheep Creek Road and at the Sheep Creek Campground that are threatened. There is also a Colville repeater station that is 2-3 miles from the blaze.
