Spokane Valley firefighters responded to a report of a man yelling for help in the middle of the Spokane River around 3 p.m. Monday. The caller could see he man in the river just west of the Denny Ashlock Foot Bridge. He was not wearing a life jacket. As firefighters were trying to find the man, a passing power boat pulled him on board and took him to the north side of the river, where he was met by the Spokane Valley Fire Department water rescue team. He was checked out on scene and taken to the hospital in stable condition for further evaluation. Firefighters say the man and a friend were trying to swim across the river when the man became exhausted. Unable to keep swimming, he started yelling for help.
