Two mobile homes were burned and other homes were threatened as two large brush fires burned in the South Sound Sunday, keeping firefighters across the region quite busy.
The first fire began near Covington just after 4 p.m. when a witness spotted a fire in the 25000 block of 188th Ave. SE. Firefighters arrived to find a blaze moving toward a home and spreading into thick brush. One fire truck was placed to protect the home while two others were called to fight the fire. "I saw a plume of smoke and thought boy that looks close to my house and I got close and closer and sure enough," said David Bailie.
Bailie watched firefighters come and go from his front yard as they worked to knock down the brush fire that threatened his own home.
"It probably got within 100 yards of the house," he said.
The fire kept spreading toward Highway 18, and troopers had to close two lanes of the highway for about 90 minutes due to smoke and poor visibility.
