A couple managed to escape their burning summer home in Hoodsport early Monday morning. The fire broke out just after 2 a.m. in the 24200 block of North Highway 101, according to Jeromy Hicks with the Mason County Fire Department. The couple was awakened by "popping" noises coming from outside. The wife looked out the window to see flames shooting from their garage. She woke her husband, gathered the family pets, and escaped unharmed. Several neighbors called 911 and sprayed water on the fire until firefighters could arrive. Fire investigators believe the fire started in the garage area but don't know yet what started it. The family is staying with friends in the meantime.
