Yakima County Fire District 5 conducted a wildland training field day for new and current firefighters on Sunday morning in Wapato. The training took place west of the intersection of Philip John Road and North Olden Way. The new firefighters learned how to operate pumps, how to fight fire with fire and how to create fire breaks. Dave Martin, District 5 Captain, said seven new firefighters were participating in the wildland training. “Our senior firefighters are advancing their qualifications as well,” said Capt. Martin. “We have the Selah Fire Department out here helping us out.” Eric Arrella, Fire District 5 recruit, said he joined the fire department because he wants to help out his community. “It feels great knowing that I’ll be able to help out my friends and neighbors,” said Arrella.
