A 15-year-old boy’s leg was severed Wednesday evening when he was struck by a train in Washougal.
Camas-Washougal Fire Department firefighter-paramedic Eric Bridges said officials weren’t sure what happened, but at some point while the boy was attempting to get from one side of the tracks near George Schmid Memorial Park to another, he was hurt.
“He was trying to get from one side to the other while the train was moving and got his leg caught underneath,” Bridges said.
He said the boy was transported to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, and lost much of his leg.
Firefighters and ambulances were called to 4855 Evergreen Way, near the park, around 6:50 p.m.
Bridges said there were people nearby watching a ballgame at the park who called for help after the boy’s friends flagged them down.
Bridges said the Washougal Police Department and BNSF Railway officials were investigating what happened.
