On Oct. 25, the Washington State Association of Fire Marshals named Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli the 2018 Washington State Fire Marshal of the Year. The award is the highest honor given to local fire marshals in the state. Scarpelli has a 27-year career with the City of Vancouver and has served as fire marshal since 2011. As Vancouver’s fire marshal, she manages a team responsible for fire code enforcement and development review, fire and arson investigations, and community education and outreach about fire and life safety. Scarpelli is a 2018 graduate of the 4-year Executive Fire Officer program offered at the United States National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland, which provides senior officers in key leadership roles with the skills needed to transform fire and emergency services organizations from being reactive to proactive and to reflect the diversity of America's communities.
