A jackknifed semi truck snarled traffic late Sunday night on I-5 in Tacoma, injuring six and snarling overnight traffic for hours in the chaos.
A semi driver traveling south on I-5 around 11:30 p.m. Sunday jackknifed, struck the barrier separating the two directions of traffic on I-5 near SR-16, and caused another semi driver to hit the barrier. The semi in the northbound lanes struck at least five other vehicles, one of which rolled over onto its side.
Six people were taken to local hospitals with varying injuries, with one seriously injured and in ICU, troopers said.
The semi driver who caused the incident left the scene; however, officials haven't issued any criminal charges because he only drove to the nearest exit, and state patrol said that does not classify a hit-and-run. It was originally reported that multiple drivers followed the semi driver and called 9-1-1 to report the incident.
