An early morning residential fire gutted a small home in Rock Island on Wednesday. The blaze was reported at 4:37 a.m. in the 200 block of Saunders Avenue. A dozen firefighters from Douglas County Fire District 1 and Chelan County Fire District 1 responded to find the house fully-involved when they arrived on scene. Douglas County FD 1 Chief Dave Baker tells iFIBER ONE News that his crews had to travel 13 minutes from East Wenatchee to reach the fire’s location, and they did an excellent job given the distance involved in responding. Baker said the involved property was an older, single-story home on an individual lot. He indicated the structure had a metal roof which made it difficult for firefighters to extinguish the interior portions of the blaze.
