The Pasco Fire Department is partnering with the Pasco School District to teach school nurses how to use trauma kits. The department's paramedics and staff will hold a special training event to show how the "Stop the Bleed" kits can save a life. The Department of Homeland Security's Stop the Bleed initiative turns bystanders into rescuers by giving them the training and tools they need to save lives. Medical and military personnel are holding training classes nationwide. The classes teach citizens how to apply pressure to a wound, pack a wound, and how to apply a tourniquet. The fire department will also provide 30 of the kits to the school district. They will be located in schools around the district in case life-saving steps need to be taken. The department hopes this is a jump start to a bigger campaign. Their goal is to get staff members trained in as many schools as possible. Ben Shearer with the Pasco Fire Department says if major trauma happens in a classroom, there may not be time to wait for an ambulance.
