Fire crews have continued to raise containment on the Ponina Fire north of Beatty, and officials say that they are preparing for the hazards posed by renewed wind gusts for the remainder of this week. As of Thursday morning, the Ponina Fire was 75 percent contained and remained at 1,641 acres, according to the South Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership (SCOFMP). Fire crews are working to strengthen containment lines and mop-up activities ahead of forecasted strong winds on Thursday and Friday, SCOFMP said. Firefighters will also continue to patrol the fire area, seeking out hazards or "problem areas." Work on Wednesday focused on repairing dozer lines, smoothing berms, and mopping up 100 feet within the fire's edge. The Oregon Department of Forestry's Lake unit took back control of firefighting efforts from an incident management team on Wednesday evening.
