Tennessee crews respond to 70-acre Mill Creek Fire in Cherokee National Forest, 30 structures threatened

The Cocke County Fire Department said crews are responding to a wildfire off I-40 near the Welcome Center, in the Mill Creek area. As of 11:30 a.m. Friday, officials said that the fire was 70 acres large and 5% contained. According to the department, the fire is burning close to Exit 447. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture said 30 structures are currently threatened by the fire, but no evacuations have been issued. State and national forestry crews worked to protect structures and reinforce containment lines, and helicopters were working to cool the fire with water as well as provide reconnaissance on its size and containment. The Welcome Center remains open with crews standing by to protect it if needed.
