Fire crews in Evansville faced a unique challenge Thursday afternoon while trying to put out a grass fire near the Ohio River. The fire trucks couldn’t get close to the fire because of high water. It happened just before 2:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Old Green River Road. Fire crews said this is something you can’t train for. They battled debris in the water as well as working on the flooded road. “In my 29 years on this job that I have never seen anything like this. In the backwaters that we’ve had to get to,” said Mike Larson. Crews had to use multiple boats to get to that fire delaying the response time.
